Physical Education Curriculum Vision

The physical education curriculum at EEHS is designed to give students access to a wide range of activities where a variety of different skills will be learnt. Activities will range from invasion games to net and wall games and artistic sports. Students will complete a sport for six weeks and within that time period will learn different skills, the knowledge behind different sports and apply knowledge and skills with different tactics and application activities.

In Key Stage 3, students will have PE each week with the opportunity to do more activities in extracurricular clubs every evening. In Key Stage 4, students will increased time in PE. These will continue to improve and enhance skills and knowledge in practical sports but will also contain classroom lessons which look at the theory that underpins sporting performance and helps build towards the EDEXCEL GCSE Physical Education exams at the end of the Key Stage.

How do we help our students to ROAR?

Resilience: In PE, students are encouraged to keep trying and to push themselves to achieve their best. They are also taught to except failures and mistakes as part of the learning journey and to learn from them to achieve success.

Open Minded: Students are afforded a broad curriculum which includes a variety of sports, some of which they may have pre-conceptions about and some that they have little knowledge of. They are then pushed to put maximum effort into all sports and activities and to attend clubs in sports they know little about.

Aspirational: Students are challenged to represent the school in various sports teams and to apply to be sports captains. They are also challenged every lesson to achieve their maximum and to set high aspirational targets to work towards.

Reflective: Throughout each lesson students are questioned in order to reflect on what has been a success and where they could improve in the future. Every two or three lessons students will be asked to apply skills and knowledge from previous lessons in order to improve skills and to apply different skills and knowledge in different scenarios.

Year 7

Intent:

Based on the core skills that are learnt in primary school, activities give the students the chance to recap and develop on core skills such as passing, dribbling and shooting in invasion games; hand to eye coordination in racket sports and body control and aesthetic appreciation. At the end of Year 7 the skills and knowledge learnt in six different activities will then be used and develop in more complex skills in Year 8.

Year 8

Intent:

To continue to develop knowledge and skills (like previously done in Year 7) in activities which are slightly more complex in nature. Students will be asked to reflect and recall knowledge from previous sports and see if they can then implement skills and tactics learnt into different scenarios.

Year 7

Implementation:

Six activities from:

Football, Netball, Gymnastics, Short Tennis, Table Tennis, Basketball, Athletics and Rounders.

Year 8

Implementation:

Six activities from:

Rugby, Hockey, Trampolining, Volleyball, Handball, Badminton, Tennis and Cricket

Example of a terms work for different KS3 activities

Year 9

Intent:

Our intent in year 9 is to apply all the skills and knowledge in different activities done in Year 7 and Year 8 and to take on different roles and responsibilities and to work in different group dynamics. In Year 9, students will still complete six activities which will be a mixture of the ones done previously. They will follow a sport education model where students will work in groups, create activities, take on leadership roles and work together to compete against other groups.

Year 10 (GCSE Physical Education)

Intent:

Within GCSE PE, Year 10 students are introduced to a range of different theoretical content which the students will learn to apply to practical scenarios in sport and physical activity. They will also develop exam techniques and familiarise themselves with exam style questions on the range of different topics. Towards the end of Year 10, students will apply theory knowledge into creating and performing a personal exercise plan which will go towards their overall GCSE grade.

Within practical lessons, students will apply skills in different activities into game-based scenarios and will continue to develop; accuracy, consistency and overall game effectiveness.

Implementation:

Year 11 (GCSE Physical Education)

Intent:

Continue to develop knowledge and skills when studying more complex GCSE theory and for students to advance their exam technique skills ready for the exams at the end of the key stage. In the practical aspect of the course, students will focus in on their best sports and continue to progress skills as they are assessed in their three best sports.

Implementation:

Year 10 (Cambridge National Sport Studies)

Intent:

Students will be introduced to theory lessons for PE for the first time. Students will look to complete the first units of the course, specifically the relationship between sport and the media. Students will also be taught how to improve their ICT skills and their writing skills in order to prepare them for the assignments and coursework they will complete through the course. In practical lessons students will look to improve their sporting skills in individual and team based sports. They will work on basic skills as well as tactics. They will also work on officiating skills in order to prepare them for the practical unit of the course.

Implementation:

Year 11 (Cambridge National Sport Studies)

Intent:

Student will aim to develop knowledge of the contemporary issues within sport in preparation for their exam. Along with knowledge, students will work to improve and master exam technique and understand how different theories apply to different practical scenarios. Students will also continue to use and improve their literacy skills when completing the final coursework module; Working in the sports industry.

Implementation:

Year 12 (OCR A Level Physical Education)

Intent:

In the first year of sixth form we encourage the students to throw themselves into their subject and start to form a deep understanding of a wide range of content across the course. Students will be introduced to brand new content, across six disciplines of theory PE as well as build on their knowledge that they have formed in the previous key stage. Students will also continue to develop literacy and exam technique skills to prepare them for the long answer questions they will complete in their exams. Students will continue to use theoretical knowledge and apply it to a wide range of sporting examples.

Implementation:

Year 13 (OCR A Level Physical Education)

Intent:

In the final year of A level PE, students will continue to learn new, challenging content across the six aspects of the course. They will be forced to apply knowledge to practical scenarios and exam questions. Students will also have to apply all of their knowledge to a practical performance in a sport of their choice when they complete their EAPI coursework. In this they will develop their presenting skills as well as their ability to analyse and evaluate a sporting performance and how a sporting performance can be improved and linking it to theoretical content. They will look to perfect their exam technique of short, mid and long range questioning so they have the tools to succeed in their final exam.

Implementation:

Year 12 (Pearson BTEC Level 3 Sport)

Intent:

Students will look to improve their literacy skills in order to be able to complete the coursework units of the course to a high ability. Student will look to complete four different coursework units throughout the year and for that they will need to perfect their communication skills when completing practical tasks and coaching sessions, subject knowledge to be able to achieve the highest grades in their assignments and organisation skills in order to stay on top of deadlines and complete all assignments to a high level.

Implementation:

Year 13 (Level 3 BTEC Sport)

Intent: In the final year of the course the aim is to develop exam technique, interoperate date and problem solve to come up with solutions for different practical scenarios. These skills, along with continued enhancement of theoretical knowledge, form the base for students to succeed in the two exam units of the course. Students will also use the literacy and communication skills to complete the final coursework unit of the course.
