PSHE Through ROAR
ROAR curriculum vision
Learning to ROAR is a subject which aims to equip our students with the capabilities to confidently approach any challenge which they may face now or in later life. Students may potentially be exposed to some challenging experiences as they progress into adulthood. We hope, through learning to ROAR, that students will feel confidently equipped to tackle and solve the range of difficulties which they could face. We aim to encourage all students to participate and engage with the 30 minute lessons which will explore both local and national issues in our society. Through focusing on the three core themes recommended by the PSHE Association we will be able to develop their overall awareness of key areas surrounding health and wellbeing, relationships and sex education and living in the wider world. These opportunities will create more rounded, thoughtful and tolerant young people.
How do we help our students to ROAR?
Resilient: Students will learn mechanisms to become tolerant young adults through exploring key challenges they could be faced with and options they could use to deal with these challenges. This in turn will develop student’s resilience as they explore different case study scenarios to discover what options people have when faced with difficulties.
Open-Minded: Students will explore different topics in key stages 3, 4 and 5 surrounding the three core themes in ROAR. Students will be encouraged to examine their perspective on these key themes whilst understanding and respecting why people have differing views and opinions. ROAR aims to encourage an appreciation for the diverse community in which we live and how we can learn from each other’s ideas and perspectives.
Aspirational: In order to ensure that we have equipped students with all the necessary requirements to enter further education or the world of work, the wider world sessions will develop students’ transferable skills. This in turn will equip them with the confidence to approach any future opportunity they wish to pursue with all the appropriate experience and techniques.
Reflective: Through exploring the 3 core themes in ROAR students will be able to relate the key topic areas to their own experiences and reflect on whether they approached the situation effectively. This will allow them to consider whether an alternative option may have been better. As students are faced with varying situations in their future, they can reflect on their ROAR lessons as a source of guidance on what to do whilst analysing the best choices moving forward.
Year 7:
Intent:
Year 7 students will receive an introduction to each core theme as they progress through the year to understand the purpose of focusing on these key areas. Students will then learn about age appropriate topics within each of these core themes built around the PSHE associations programme builder. A range of activities will be used such as debates, creative tasks and baseline assessments to track students progress throughout the year.
Implementation:
Year 8:
Intent:
Year 8 will follow a similar programme to year 7 in Autumn 1 & 2 and Summer 1 & 2. Due to the new curriculum being incorporated this year it was important that students did not have any gaps in their learning in light of this. This will be alongside some new topic areas surrounding wider world and health and wellbeing content. This will develop students understanding on key relevant issues whilst incorporating scenarios which focus on the local area.
Implementation:
Year 9:
Intent:
Year 9 will explore a range of topics within the core themes which will allow them to explore topical issues which are very prominent in media sources currently. It is important that students have an awareness of these key areas e.g. sexual harassment or the law around drugs, so that they are aware of what to do if they find themselves in this situation and the different support avenues available to them.
Implementation:
Year 10:
Intent:
Year 10 will follow an age appropriate programme which explores core focus areas which have been recommended by the PSHE association following a review into KS4 PSHE education. This is to ensure that KS4 have the appropriate knowledge to be able to make informed decisions about their choices as they move into adulthood, whilst having an awareness of the support available to them. Students will look at topics both relevant to the local area and nationally.
Implementation:
Year 11:
Intent:
The year 11 curriculum will build on the key ideas and core themes explored in year 10. This will create a sequence to their learning whereby students are able to draw connections to their ideas and understanding of these core topics. Students will be able to confidently deal with a range of scenarios through their learning journey which has taken place in KS3 and KS4 for whichever steps they choose to take post year 11.
Implementation:
Year 12 & 13
Intent:
Year 12 and 13 will follow a tailored programme which has been designed using the PSHE association programme builders and working in collaboration with the Head of Sixth Form. We feel its important to engage KS5 through the use of topical, relevant issues facing their age groups and potential risks they could be exposed to in social situations or in life beyond sixth form. A range of resources will be used to support these sessions. Learning will be used to apply their ideas to project based tasks and reflection sessions where students can offer their views on what they have learnt.
